How it works
To add VAT: gross = net × (1 + rate/100). To remove VAT: net = gross / (1 + rate/100). The VAT amount is simply the difference between the gross and net figures.
Frequently asked questions
How do I remove VAT from a price?
Divide the gross price by 1 plus the VAT rate. For 20% VAT, divide by 1.20 — e.g. £120 ÷ 1.20 = £100 net.
Is VAT the same as sales tax?
Functionally similar for consumers, but VAT is collected at each stage of the supply chain while sales tax is charged only at the final sale.
